Session with SMSP on Significance of World Environment Day.
A session was held today at Safa Mera Primary School to raise awareness among elementary school students (grades 1-6) about the significance of World Environment Day 2024. The theme for this year, “Land Restoration and Drought Resilience,” was explained to the students. We conducted an engaging and interactive session, discussing how bringing recyclables to school and diverting them from landfills contributes to land restoration. Additionally, the students were educated about drought, drought resilience, and water conservation.
Concepts such as rainwater harvesting were explained. They were made aware that during a heatwave and drought (which we are currently experiencing in Islamabad), birds and animals are in dire need of drinking water.
We conducted an upcycling activity where we created a water container for birds and stray cats and dogs using waste milk containers retrieved from waste. The kids showed great interest in the activity, committing to water conservation and creating water stations for birds and animals. We translated the #WorldEnvironmentDay2024 slogan into Urdu using words that were relatable and understood by the kids. The students wholeheartedly chanted the slogan “ہم نسل تجدید ہیں,” pledging to be the #generationrestoration.
We concluded the activity by treating them to local street ice cream, which is free from packaging and served in metal containers. The ice cream sticks were saved for craft activities later on.
